System Requirements
Blackout is a full-fledged software application and, as such, requires appropriate hardware to function optimally. To ensure you get the most out of the app, let's make sure your gear is up to snuff.
Platform Availability
Blackout is exclusively available for iPads running iPadOS. It is not available on Android, macOS, or other platforms.
🚀 Recommended iPad Models
For the best Blackout experience, we recommend the latest USB-C iPad models. These devices provide enhanced performance, superior connectivity, and are ready for future updates and features.
🏆 Current Powerhouse (Future-Proofed with WiFi 7)
iPad Pro M5 (8th Generation - 2025 - 13-in)
This is the latest model with WiFi 7 support, providing maximum future-proofing for your investment.
TIP
Jeff and Ian personally test Blackout on the iPad Pro M4 (7th Generation (2024) 13-in - 256GB) to ensure performance and compatibility.
⚙️ Minimum Requirements
We recommend at least an M2 iPad for the best performance. That said, many users run Blackout successfully on older models. Just be aware: older hardware may struggle with advanced effects or large projects.
📱 Screen Size Recommendations
We recommend iPads with screens 10.2" or larger.
Yes, the iPad Mini can run Blackout, but the small screen limits navigation and the overall experience isn't as strong.
Bigger is Better: The larger your screen, the easier it is to navigate Blackout's interface and work with multiple features simultaneously.
📦 Storage & Performance
Blackout is pretty lightweight, so you don't need a 1TB or 2TB model.
However, those higher-capacity models come with a better CPU and 16GB RAM — a definite plus if you're planning to run heavier effects or lots of simultaneous cues.
🔌 Connectivity Essentials
Go USB-C over Lightning. A good hub is key for connecting to lighting networks (via Ethernet) and USB MIDI controllers. USB-C hubs give you more ports and more power — it's a win-win.
While exploring Blackout, you might find yourself in need of making hardwire connections to enhance your control setup. It's important to note that it's often easier and cheaper to pick up a USB-C hub than a Lightning dongle for these connections. USB-C hubs generally offer more ports and better performance, allowing you to connect directly to your lighting network via Ethernet and to USB MIDI controllers at the same time.

What About Older iPads?
While Blackout can be used on older iPad models, including the iPad Mini, be aware that:
- Screens smaller than 10.2 inches provide a limited user experience
- Older hardware may struggle with advanced effects or large fixture counts
- Lightning-based iPads have more limited connectivity options compared to USB-C models
